The Magnetic Field The phenomenon on Earth that makes directional compasses point to the north and south poles can tell us something about Earth's age. Like everything else in the universe the principle of progressive deterioration ( the second law of thermodynamics ) is in operation here too. Physicist Thomas Barnes points out that the Earth's magnetic field has been decaying regularly since it was first measured in 1835.If the half-life of the field is truly what Dr. Barnes has shown from careful measurements the conclusion is that Earth's magnetic field would have been equal to that of a magnetic star as little as 10,000 years ago. |
According to Dr. Barnes, to be consistent with the laws of physics, and assuming the magnetic field has continually weakened, we can only conclude that life on Earth would not have been possible more than 10,000 years ago.
